Microsoft has replaced the legacy Report Message add-in with the new Report button in Outlook. This button allows users to report phishing, spam (junk), or legitimate emails directly to Microsoft and your organization's security team, helping improve email protection.
The built-in Report button helps Microsoft and your organization’s security team identify suspicious messages and improve email protection.
- Open Microsoft Outlook.
- Select the email message you want to report.
-
From the Home ribbon, select Report.
- Select the appropriate reporting option:
- Report phishing: Use this option when the message appears to impersonate a trusted person or organization, requests sensitive information, or contains suspicious links or attachments.
- Report junk: Use this option for spam or other unwanted messages.
-
Not junk: Use this option when a legitimate message was incorrectly delivered to the Junk Email folder.
- Confirm the report when prompted.
The selected message will be submitted according to your organization’s Microsoft 365 security configuration. It may be sent to Microsoft, your organization’s security team, or both.
Depending on the option selected and your organization’s settings, Outlook may also move or remove the reported message from its current folder.
Note: Selecting the main Report button without opening its dropdown menu may immediately report the message as phishing. Use the dropdown arrow when you need to report the message as junk or not junk.
Note: The available reporting options and confirmation messages may vary depending on your organization’s Microsoft 365 configuration.
