Overview
This article provides step-by-step instructions for resetting a user's password in the Microsoft Entra Admin Center. Use this procedure when a user has forgotten their password, is locked out, or requires a password reset for security reasons. According to Microsoft guidance, administrators with the appropriate permissions can generate a temporary password that the user must change upon their next sign-in.
Prerequisites
Before proceeding, ensure you have one of the following roles:
- Password Administrator
- User Administrator
- Global Administrator
A Password Administrator role is the minimum role required to reset user passwords in Microsoft Entra ID.

Reset a User Password
Step 1: Sign In
- Open the Microsoft Entra Admin Center.
- Sign in using an account with administrative permissions.
Step 2: Navigate to Users
- In the left navigation pane, select Microsoft Entra ID.
- Select Users.
- Select All Users.
Step 3: Select the User
- Search for the affected user.
- Select the user account to open the profile page.
Step 4: Reset the Password
- On the user's profile page, select Reset password.
- Review the generated temporary password.
- Select Reset password to confirm.
Step 5: Provide the Temporary Password Securely
- Copy the generated password.
- Share it with the user through a secure method such as:
- Phone call
- Secure messaging platform
- Approved password-sharing solution
Step 6: User Signs In
- The user signs in using the temporary password.
- The user is prompted to create a new password.
- The password update completes, and access is restored.
The temporary password remains valid until the user signs in and changes it.
