When you delete items (including OneDrive for Business files) from a SharePoint site, they're sent to the site Recycle Bin (also called the first stage Recycle Bin), where you can restore them if you need to.
Restoring Deleted Items from the Site Collection (Second Stage) Recycle Bin in SharePoint Online
Steps to Restore Deleted Items
- Navigate to the SharePoint site where the item was deleted.
- In the left navigation pane, click Recycle Bin.
- If not visible:
- Click Settings → Site Settings.
- Under Site Collection Administration, click Recycle Bin.
- If not visible:
- Scroll to the bottom of the Recycle Bin page and click Second stage recycle bin.
- Select the items you want to restore by checking the box next to each.
- Click Restore to return the items to their original locations.
Permissions Required
- You must be a site collection administrator or have owner permissions to access the second stage Recycle Bin.
Retention Period
- Items are retained for 93 days from the time of deletion.
- If deleted from the first stage Recycle Bin, they move to the second stage and remain for the remainder of the 93 days.
- After this period, they are permanently deleted.
Storage Quota
- The second stage Recycle Bin has a quota of 200% of the site collection quota.
- It does not count against the storage used metric, unlike the first stage Recycle Bin.
Restoration Behavior
- Securable objects (e.g., folders, libraries, lists) are restored with all their contents.
- If the container object (e.g., a library or folder) is deleted, it must be restored before restoring items inside it.
- Exception: If a file was deleted from a folder, restoring the file will automatically recreate the folder in its original location.
Backup Recovery
- If the item is not in either Recycle Bin, Microsoft 365 retains backups for 14 additional days.
- An admin can contact Microsoft Support to request a restore.
- Note: This only applies to site collections or subsites, not individual files or libraries.
