Issue
Mac cannot connect to Wi-Fi or experiences frequent disconnections.
Environment
- macOS (all versions)
Symptoms
- Unable to join a Wi-Fi network.
- Wi-Fi disconnects intermittently.
- Slow or unstable internet connection.
Cause
- Corrupted network settings.
- Router or modem issues.
- Outdated macOS or network drivers.
Resolution
Step 1: Toggle Wi-Fi
- Click the Wi-Fi icon in the menu bar.
- Select Turn Wi-Fi Off.
- Wait 10 seconds, then select Turn Wi-Fi On.
Step 2: Restart Devices
- Restart your Mac:
- Apple Menu > Restart.
- Restart your router/modem:
- Power off for 30 seconds, then turn back on.
Step 3: Forget and Reconnect to Network
- Go to Apple Menu > System Settings > Wi-Fi.
- Select your network and click Forget This Network.
- Reconnect by entering the Wi-Fi password.
Step 4: Reset Network Settings
- Open Finder.
- Navigate to:
~/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/ - Locate and delete the file:
com.apple.network.identification.plist - Restart your Mac to apply changes.
Step 5: Additional Checks
- Ensure macOS is updated:
Apple Menu > System Settings > Software Update. - Test with another Wi-Fi network to rule out router issues.
Expected Outcome
Wi-Fi should reconnect and remain stable after performing these steps.
