This error is sometimes caused because of previous OneDrive credentials and/or you have recently migrated from a GoDaddy to a Microsoft tenant.
1. Close OneDrive Completely
- Right-click the OneDrive icon in the system tray and select Close OneDrive or Exit.
2. Clear Cached Credentials
This step is especially helpful if you've recently migrated from GoDaddy or changed tenants.
- Open File Explorer
- Enable Hidden Items via the View tab
- Navigate to:
C:\Users\<YourUsername>\AppData\Local\Microsoft
- Delete the following folders:
IdentityCache
OneAuth
These folders store cached authentication data that may conflict with your current login
3. Reset OneDrive
If clearing cache doesn’t work, reset the OneDrive sync app:
- Press
Windows + R
to open the Run dialog - Type:
%localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\onedrive.exe /reset
- If you get a “Windows cannot find…” error, try:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft OneDrive\onedrive.exe /reset
or
C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft OneDrive\onedrive.exe /reset
- After reset, restart OneDrive manually by searching for OneDrive in the Start menu
4. Sign In Again
- Open OneDrive and sign in using your work or school account.
- Ensure you’re using the correct credentials associated with your Microsoft 365 tenant.
5. Optional: Unlink and Reconnect OneDrive
- Go to OneDrive settings > Account tab
- Click Unlink this PC
- Reconnect using your Microsoft 365 credentials
Notes
- You can disable Hidden Items again after troubleshooting.
- If the issue persists, check for Windows updates, OneDrive app updates, or tenant-level restrictions.
